MHSO Highway Infrastructure webinar on August 28

ASHE Chesapeake will be hosting the next MHSO webinar on Monday, August 28 at 12:00PM EST. The session will focus on pedestrians and bicyclists and will speak directly to the work you do each day as a highway professional.

Speakers will include Jeff Dunckel, Pedestrian Safety Coordinator for Montgomery County, Bala Akundi of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, and Dustin Kuzan, an ADA Compliance Engineer with Tindale Oliver.

Jeff Dunckel, Pedestrian Safety Coordinator Montgomery County 

Jeff is the Pedestrian Safety Coordinator for Montgomery County Department of Transportation.  Jeff  leads the County’s effort to implement the County Executive’s Pedestrian Safety Initiative, reducing fatalities and injuries resulting form pedestrian collisions. He aims to improve traffic safety and create more walkable and bikeable communities.

Bala Akundi, Baltimore Metropolitan Council 

Bala is a Principal Transportation Engineer with the Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC), which provides technical support to the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Baltimore region. He has been an active member on three Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) planning and implementation teams dating back to 2004 and is currently serving as co-chair on the infrastructure emphasis area team. Over the past ten years, he has led the deployment of several safety education and outreach campaigns in the Baltimore region such as the Street Smart pedestrian safety campaign.

Dustin Kuzan, ADA Compliance Engineer | Tindale Oliver

Dustin is a licensed civil engineer with over nine years of experience across a diverse set of areas with a focus on pedestrian accessibility and safety. For over a year Dustin has focused on reviewing designs, policies and performing inspections for ADA compliance with Federal ADA standards, local accessibility codes and the International Building Code (IBC). Prior to this, Dustin spent five years overseeing the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) bicycle and pedestrian programs including reviewing, enhancing and/or coordinating designs, policies and programs for Complete Streets and pedestrian access in the public right-of-way. As part of this role he also created and implemented SHA’s first pedestrian safety program and lead a statewide coalition on pedestrian safety that created, coordinated and implemented pedestrian safety strategies across the state of Maryland.

The session will focus on highway infrastructure and will speak directly to the work you do each day as a highway professional. The following speakers will discuss different safety issues as they relate to highway infrastructure.

Bala Akundi, Baltimore Metropolitan Council

Brian is a Portfolio Manager for Surface Transportation Solutions for Leidos in the greater Seattle area. He is an author, public speaker and workshop facilitator with more than 18 years of experience in traffic safety and operations in state government, Federal government, and the private sector. His expertise includes hands-on field work, statewide leadership, business development, and project, program, and staff management. He is regarded as a national expert in crash data analysis, safety engineering countermeasures, safety evaluation, and safety program management.

Join ASHE on June 1, 2017 at Oakmont Green for its Annual Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fundraiser. The annual golf tournament is the primary fundraiser for the ASHE Chesapeake Scholarship Program, with all proceeds going towards the scholarship program.  This year, ASHE awarded three $3,000 scholarships to students studying civil engineering at local universities, bringing the total amount of scholarships awarded to date to over $70,000.  Donate $200 towards the ASHE scholarship fund and create your own company logo sign to be placed at a Tee Box on the course.

April 20 – Member Appreciation Night

Join ASHE colleagues for the annual Member Appreciation Night on Thursday, April 20, 2017, beginning 6pm at the Engineers Club in Baltimore.

The event will begin with networking and an open bar followed by dinner featuring keynote speaker Larry Ridlen, ASHE National  President. The Section will also present the John Bruck Memorial Scholarship to local university students and recognize Chesapeake Section Past Presidents.

MHSO Distracted Driving webinar on April 13

The session will focus on distracted driving and occupant protection. Speakers will include Captain Thomas Didone, Director of the Montgomery County Police Department’s Traffic Division and co-chairman of the Occupant Protection Emphasis Area for MDOT’s Strategic Highways Safety Plan, Major Kevin Anderson, Commander for the Patrol Division of the MDTA Police and chairperson of the Distracted Driving Emphasis Area Team for the Strategic Highway Safety Plan, and Christina Utz, Statewide Occupant Protection & Distracted Driving Program Manager for the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
